AI is both a threat and an opportunity for Swedish entrepreneurship

AI opens up major opportunities for Sweden. But in an economy where pace decides the outcome, more ideas aren't enough: without fast growth and scaling, much of Sweden's innovative strength risks being commercialized elsewhere.

Summary

Sweden has one of the world's strongest research bases but one of its weakest commercialisation rates. According to OECD and Eurostat data, only 2–6 percent of all companies reach scale-up phase. In AI-driven markets, it's no longer technology that decides: it's scaling speed.

The window to establish market leadership is shrinking. The outcome becomes 'winner-takes-most' fast. Waiting out the uncertainty is an active choice with major consequences, and even a cautious pace can prove costly.

Sweden needs to get better at identifying companies with scale potential early and systematically connecting them to operators, capital and commercial competence. Otherwise the value of our innovation gets realised somewhere else.
