The forestry industry has long measured its timber stacks with a folding rule and experience, with a margin of error around fifteen per cent. One company counted on 1,200 cubic metres in the yard. There were 580. That ends in production stoppages, wrong financial reporting and customers who don't get their delivery.
The idea came out of Karl Forsman's thesis work at Martinsons, later acquired by Holmen. LumberScan let the customer fly an ordinary consumer drone over the yard and produced an exact figure automatically. An inventory that used to take up to nine hours, and meant people climbing on timber stacks, became something you do yourself, often, from safe ground. Holmen became a customer early.
